Their origins can be found in ancient pagan rites and celebrations. They were adopted by apostate Christianity in an effort to have everybody get along. If they were actual Christian celebrations, God would see to it that they remained pure. As it is, he disapproves of these ones, and therefore they become less and less about God, more and more about commercialism.
